Δίνεται έτσι ένα εγκυρότερο κείμενο, πλησιέστερο στη γραφή του Γεωργίου Χορτάτση. Στην εισαγωγή εξετάζονται τα προβλήματα του ποιητή και της χρονολόγησης, των πολλαπλών ιταλικών πηγών, της γραμματολογικής βαθμίδας (Αναγέννηση ή μπαρόκ;) και του ιδεολογικού περιεχομένου του έργου, που είναι η αντίθεση στην αυταρχική εξουσία και στα κοινωνικά στεγανά. Εξετάζονται επίσης οι λαογραφικές απηχήσεις και οι ως σήμερα σκηνικές παρουσίες της Ερωφίλης, καθώς και η βαθμιαία καταξίωση του ποιητή, που ο Παλαμάς, στον πρόλογο της Τρισεύγενης, τον αναγνώρισε ως τον «πατέρα της νέας μας δραματικής τέχνης».
